- The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, the 19th edition, was released by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP).
- It ranks 163 countries based on 23 indicators that measure peace across three main areas:
- Societal Safety and Security
- The Extent of ongoing domestic and international conflicts
- The degree of Militarization

- India’s Rank: India is ranked 115th (with a score of 2.229), an improvement from 116th in 2024.

Global Trends:
- The average level of country peacefulness deteriorated by 0.36 per cent in the 2025 Global Peace Index. This is the sixth consecutive year that global peacefulness has deteriorated.
- In the past year, 74 countries recorded an improvement, while 87 countries recorded deterioration in peacefulness.
- The gap between the most and least peaceful countries continues to grow, with ‘peace inequality’ widening by 11.7 per cent in the past two decades.
- There were 59 state-based conflicts in 2023, the highest number since the end of World War II.
- The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains the world’s least peaceful region.
- Around the world, there are now over 122 million people that have been forcibly displaced. The number of people forcibly displaced has increased by over 185 per cent since the inception of the GPI (2007).
