AGNI-5 MISSILE
Why in News:
- On August 20, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired the Agni-5 missile. This launch fulfilled all operational and technical parameters.
- The test was conducted from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha.
Development:
- It has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
Key Features of the Missile:
- Agni-5 is a Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile.
- Agni-5 is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, meaning it can be launched at multiple targets simultaneously.
- The missile is capable of carrying a nuclear payload of up to 1.5 tons.
- The speed of Agni-5 is approximately 24 Mach, which is 24 times the speed of sound.
- The missile’s launching system incorporates canister technology, which facilitates its easy transportation to any location.
