The dam on Yarlung zangbo (Tibet) is being built on the Great Bend’ where the river makes a U-turn in Medog before entering India in Arunachal Pradesh.
Tibet ir seismically active zone and the region where the dam is being built is earthquake prone and ecologically fragile region.
May alter water flow into Assam and Arunachal.
Risk of flooding due to dam failure.
Could be used as strategic pressure in conflict.
Mitigation Measures
Build buffer storage and early warning systems – The storage of Upper Siang project in Arunachal (300m high dam).
Strengthen water diplomacy and cross border talks with Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar.
National Water Development Authority proposed links to connect Brahmaputra and its tributaries to Ganga basin.
