China’s Mega Dam on Brahmaputra – India’s concern


Project Highlights

  • 8 billion hydropower project dam on Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) near Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Will generate 60,000 MW- world’s largest hydro project on completion.

India’s Concern

  • The dam on Yarlung zangbo (Tibet) is being built on the Great Bend’ where the river makes a U-turn in Medog before entering India in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Tibet ir seismically active zone and the region where the dam is being built is earthquake prone and ecologically fragile region.
  • May alter water flow into Assam and Arunachal.
  • Risk of flooding due to dam failure.
  • Could be used as strategic pressure in conflict.

 

Mitigation Measures

  • Build buffer storage and early warning systems – The storage of Upper Siang project in Arunachal (300m high dam).
  • Strengthen water diplomacy and cross border talks with Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar.
  • National Water Development Authority proposed links to connect Brahmaputra and its tributaries to Ganga basin.
