Semicon India 2025

Semicon India 2025

On September 2, 2025, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated “Semicon India 2025” at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. This event, aimed at boosting India’s semiconductor ecosystem. It is being jointly organised by India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and SEMI, a global industry organization.

  • During the event, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, presented the Prime Minister with the first indigenous chip.
  • Name of this chip is Vikram-3201, it is a 32 bit Microprocessor.
  • The Minister also announced that five semiconductor units are currently under construction and 23 chip design projects have been approved by the government.
  • Semiconductor plants are being established in Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh.

Vikram-3201

  • Vikram-3201 is an indigenous 32-bit microprocessor designed specifically for use in rockets and satellites.
  • It will assist in satellite navigation, control, and mission management.
  • This chip is capable of performing essential calculations in microseconds, ensuring that a satellite stays on its correct path.
  • It was developed by ISRO with the help of the Semiconductor Laboratory in Chandigarh.
  • Built to military-grade standards, Vikram-3201 can function in temperatures ranging from -55°C to 125°C.
  • Previously, ISRO was using the 16-bit processor Vikram-1601, which was based on foreign technology.
  • Vikram-3201 was built with indigenous 180-nanometer CMOS technology.
  • The chip supports 64-bit floating-point operations and is compatible with the Ada programming language.
  • Vikram-3201 has already been tested in space during the PSLV-C60 mission.

Kalpana-3201

  • Kalpana-3201 is a 32-bit SPARC V8 RISC microprocessor designed for open-source toolchain compatibility, with the goal of enhancing India’s indigenous capabilities.
  • The first batch of both Vikram-3201 and Kalpana-3201 was delivered to ISRO in March 2025.
